We Fight Any Claim Blog Article Image The Race Is On To Support Shine!

Spina Bifida is a type of birth defect that occurs when the bones of the spine do not form properly around part of a baby's spinal cord. In most cases of Spina Bifida, surgery can be used to close the opening in the spine. However, the nervous system will usually already have been damaged.

Many babies will also have, or will go on to develop Hydrocephalus. This is a build-up of fluid on the brain, which can cause further damage.

It’s estimated that around 12,000 babies and children in the UK are affected by Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus.

Formed in 1966, Shine is a national charity which provides specialist support for those living with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus, and their families.

Many of the children Shine supports are born severely disabled. Throughout their childhood they have to go through numerous surgical procedures aimed at giving them a better quality of life. However, many children will be paralysed from the waist down and up to 90% will have brain injuries as a result of hydrocephalus.

The work Shine carries out ranges from ensuring children have the right wheelchair to suit their needs to putting them in contact with children in similar situations, so they can share their experiences. They also have health experts who are available to offer practical and emotional support to the child and their family.

Children receive a free membership to the Benny & Bella Bear Club. Benny & Bella are Shine’s mascots. Benny has Hydrocephalus and Bella has Spina Bifida, and it comforts the children to know the bears face the same difficulties that they do.

Since the early 90s, one of Shine’s major fundraising initiatives has been sponsored balloon races. Over the years, the nature of the event has evolved from actual balloon races to virtual balloon races, to reduce the environmental impacts of the race. 1000s of companies up and down the country pay for a balloon to be featured in the race, with all the money raised going towards helping Shine and the incredible work they do.

At 10.00am this morning, 4725 virtual balloons were launched from Jerusalem in The Benny and Bella Balloon Race – and three of those balloons are ours!

The race runs from now until 12th January, and you can help push our balloons further by sharing the links we will be posting on our social media platforms.

The virtual balloon race is a fun way to make a serious difference, so show your support for this amazing charity and our balloons!
