We Fight Any Claim Community Blog Image You Shall Go To The (Team Oarstruck) Ball!

On 12th December 2017, Hugo Thompson and his ‘Team Oarstruck’ comrades set off on the challenge of a lifetime – a 3000 mile journey across the Atlantic in a rowing boat!

What was the reason for this epic expedition you ask?

Well, apart from satisfying Hugo’s thirst for adventure (you could say he is somewhat of an adrenaline junkie), it was to raise money for Diabetes UK.

Hugo suffers with type 1 diabetes, and is the first person with his condition to row the Atlantic! Thankfully, his health held up throughout the challenge meaning he could focus his attention on battling the 40ft waves the team faced throughout the trip!

55 days, 2 hours and 23 minutes after setting off from La Gomera the team landed in Antigua, having successfully completed The Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge!

Back on home soil they went on to organise the Team Oarstruck Ball, which was held at The Celtic Manor Resort on 5th May 2018. The black tie event was an opportunity for those who had followed Team Oarstruck throughout their adventure to hear about the ups and downs of the trip.

We Plan Group senior managers saw a great opportunity to not only show support for Hugo’s amazing achievement, but also reward some of their star performers. A table of ten was paid for and Hugo’s teammates were sent off to support him at the event.

Claire White, Training Officer, said:

“We were all so grateful to our manager for sending us to the Team Oarstruck Ball. It was lovely for the team to get some recognition for the hard work they’ve been putting in. Even better we could go along and support our colleague after his fantastic achievement! It really was a great evening!”

Claire and the rest of the team joined around 500 others who attended the ball, which included a Q & A with the team and a three course meal.

Profits from the evening helped to raise the fundraising total to over £40,000!

We are so proud of Hugo for completing the challenge of a lifetime and raising such a fantastic amount for Diabetes UK.

Our employees are great at the jobs they do, but it’s not the only thing they do. They have talents, passions and hobbies out of work that they can be really proud of – and we are proud of them too!
